We are updating Cerulean, our tool for tracking global marine oil pollution, to enhance support for users tracking very recent pollution events! The new release evaluates oil slick detections in near real-time as public satellite imagery becomes available to support faster identification of potential incidents within a few hours of image capture. The ability to filter recent detections for higher-confidence events will allow swifter action on oil slicks. Get all the details in our latest blog post!

Karl Wurster joins SkyTruth executive leadership team as Chief Technology Officer
In his role as CTO, Karl will oversee our growing conservation technology program, guiding our multidisciplinary engineering, science, and product team in developing innovative tools that power climate action, biodiversity protection, and environmental justice.
Before joining us, Karl served as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer with USAID for nearly two decades, directing programs across Africa, Asia, and Europe focused on climate resilience, natural resource governance, digital infrastructure, and economic development.
He has worked extensively with satellite data, geospatial analysis, and long-term conservation research collaborations that translate complex data into policy action and connect global technical teams and products with local partners and stakeholders.
SkyTruth in Action: World Ocean Summit
Impact Analyst Bimini Horstmann and Biodiversity Program Manager Moses Jackson attended the Economist Impact World Ocean Summit in Montréal, where attendees convened to focus on turning sustainable ocean commitments into concrete actions.
Bimini joined our partner ProtectedSeas to serve as a panelist for a workshop titled "How to accelerate MPA Implementation: from global commitments to on-the-water delivery,” where she also led a roundtable on tools, AI, and decision-ready data.
Key takeaways from the workshop included:
We don’t lack ocean data; we lack decision-ready information. With the global 30x30 target approaching quickly,
AI and digital tools have real potential to accelerate marine protected area planning, monitoring, and enforcement.
These tools must be built upon trusted data and designed to be accessible to decision-makers.
These reflect our work and vision as well—to foster transparency by providing free access to data, tools, and analysis for those working to create, monitor, and protect vital ecosystems around the world. Learn more about our ocean work >
SkyTruth at 25: Taking a look back as we celebrate our 25th anniversary
Nearly 16 years ago, we revealed that the spill from Deepwater Horizon–considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in history–was far larger than its operator claimed when it occurred. Today, we continue to serve as an environmental watchdog, providing free tools and analysis to monitor and combat oil pollution.
